70s Week: From Song to Movie... gaane se filam tak...

The 70s week is here and so are the fun times....

I haven't had chance to watch a lot of 70s films but what I already have gotten a chance to do is listen to the music so I decided to contribute in this area.

You can see why this era had such memorable and famous songs... they were so famous new directors chose to be lazy and just named their movies using these songs. And why wouldn't they? Because the success of the films was so high they knew if they named their movies with the same name, they'd have hits. ;) Yea right!

Let's go check them out:

  • 1970
And who else would we start with but Kaka!? Kishore Kumar's beautiful singing, a piano/party song and the way Kaka blinks at us at 0:25 is to die for.. well, at least back then it was, and women actually did. He ruled hearts of Indian film watching women and they committed suicide the day he got married. That's how much they loved them. Check out why pyaar deewana hota hai...

Song: Pyaar Deewaana Hota Hai Mastaana Hota Hai
    Film: Kati Patang
    Singer: Kishore Kumar
    Music Director: R. D. Burman
New Film: Pyaar Deewaana Hota Hai (2002)

  • 1971
Yet again Kaka's magic is added to Mala Sinha's beauty. I actually watched this song for the first time today and can declare that she was actually the queen of HFM beyond the 60s.

Song: Chupke Se Dil De De.. Shor Mach Jaayega
    Film: Maryada
    Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar
    Music Director: Kalyanji-Anandji
    New Film: Chupke Se (2003)

  • 1972
Mujra and tawaifs were never so classy until Sahebjaan came along. She was mesmerizing, elegant and drop-dead-gorgeous and when she danced, jaws just dropped in awe... one of the best albums of that decade.

Song: Chalte Chalte Yoon Hi Koyi Mil Gayaa Tha
    Film: Pakeezah
    Music Director: Ghulam Muhammad
    Singers: Lata Mangeshkar
New Films: Chalte Chalte (2003) and Koi Mil Gaya (2003)

  • 1973
A very sexy and young Dimple gets introduced and people can't take their eyes off her. She's so hot Kaka falls for her in real life. I adore how great she looks in this one. I think it's a koli dance outfit that reminds me of Madhuri in "hum ko aaj kal hai" of Sailaab.

Song: Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kate Kaale Kauve Se Dariyo
    Film: Bobby
    Music Director: Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh & Chorus
New Film: Jooth Bole Kauva Kaate (1998)

  • 1973
This one's probably the most recent one that came out. And why not? It's Shashilicious! :D No more words.

Song: Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koyi... Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa
    Film: Aa Gale Lag Jaa
    Music Director: R. D. Burman
Singers: Kishore Kumar & Sushma Shrestha
New Film: Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa (2008)

  • 1974
The most famous of them all and the one where the new one was a big hit as well...

Song: Le Jaayenge Le Jaayenge Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge
    Film: Chor Machaye Shor
    Music Director: Ravindra Jain
Singers: Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar & Chorus
New Film: Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge (1995)

  • 1974
A qawwali to add to our collection.. and what a marvelous one at that. If I have to pick top 5 qawwalis of HFM, this would definitely make it in there.

    Song: Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom Sharaabi
    Film: Five Rifles
    Music Director: Aziz Nazaan
    Singers: Aziz Nazaan
New Film: Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007)

  • 1975
There was this category of songs that became super hit because of the singer than anything else in this era. It was Kishore Kumar. He ruled the radio world and HFM in general. It was a golden time! This one is from that period.

Song: Dil Kya Kare Jab Kisi Se Kisi Ko Pyaar Ho Jaaye
    Film: Julie
    Music Director: Rajesh Roshan
    Singer: Kishore Kumar
New Film: Dil Kya Kare (1999)

  • 1976
Bakwaas actor bakwaas acting ruin a great ATF song with beautiful meaningful lyrics. This is the example. Simi G's talent wasted... it's only for Kishore Kumar's sweet voice that people remember the song even today. The actor reminds me of Dev Anand. LOL!

Song: Chalte Chalte Mere Yeh Geet Yaad Rakhna... Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
    Film: Chalte Chalte
    Music Director: Bappi Lahiri
    Singers: Kishore Kumar
New Film: Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006)

  • 1977
Bappida singing for us!!! And a completely drool-worthy Vinod Khanna in tight pants and funky sunglasses.. yoohoo! *whistles* His shirt is unbuttoned too here, btw in case you didn't know ;) Now we know why they named the new movie so.

Song: Bombai Se Aaya Mera Dost Dost Ko Salaam Karo
    Film: Aap ki Khatir
    Singers: Bappi Lahiri
    Music Director: Bappi Lahiri
New Film: Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost (2003)

  • 1978
The whole world is getting married here... no, I'm not saying that, Shotgun is. Shatrughan Sinha looks so dashing and macho and a bit mawaali-ish too (only kidding). :P Love the song because it has Mohd. Rafi sahab singing. Such a famous song you still hear people singing this at weddings all over the world.

Song: Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai
Singers: Mohammed Rafi, Deven Verma & Chorus
    Film: Aadmi Sadak Ka
    Music Director: Ravi
Singers: Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2002)

  • 1979
Tabla heaven! And if you are a fan of hot Bachchan Rekha romance, this would be your favorite. I love the song for the lyrics and the music.

    Song: Salaam-E-Ishq Meri Jaan
    Film: Muqaddar Ka Sikandar
    Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar
    Music Director: Kalyanji-Anandji
    New Film: Salaam-e-ishq (2007)

  • 1979
Amitabh-Shashi-Rekha-Parveen.. yippeeee dooo daaa dumm dee dee doo!! Who wouldn't love them?

Song: Teri Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Too Haan Kar
    Film: Suhaag
Singers: Mohammad Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Shailender Singh, Chorus
    Music Director: Laxmikant-Pyarelal
New Film: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008)

PS. Some years had more than one songs that I found so I've included those as well. I am sure you don't mind. :) Enjoy!

I had completely forgotten that Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai was an actual song in a film! It played so often in every wedding, and so tunelessly when the live band played, that its become a terrible-music-only song in mind. Thanks for reminding me that the original was nothing like that!

And I love the idea of your post - so fascinating how Bollywood legacy carries on. Of course, the 70s have movies named after songs of previous decades, too! E.g. - Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hain (Guide) became Tere Mere Sapne (1971), and Main kaa karo ram mujhe buddha mil gaya (Sangam) became Buddha Mil Gaya (1971).

Bollyviewer, so true about "aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai". I noticed that first when I saw Roop Tera Mastana a film and a song both of this decade and that's what gave me the idea. :) It's completely fascinating!

Thanks for reminder: I have Buddha Mil Gaya (1971) but haven't gotten a chance to watch it. I will soon.

Kashmira, thank you. :) Glad you enjoyed it too.
