"The" English Vinglish

After waiting for it for months I finally got to watch English Vinglish. And now I know why Raksha aunty kept on pestering mom to watch it. What an amazing movie! It's not just the acting and the storyline that making it an amazing watch, but the moral of the story too. To learn to love yourself and respect yourself. It all starts within. As usual.

My most favorite scenes of the film:

When Laurent answers why he loves coming to the class. Shashi! That was the sweetest. I honestly kept wondering where the movie is going after seeing him show his affection towards Shashi.

Every single scene where Shashi does the "yoo-hoo!" and lifts up her hand and cheers and almost jumps with joy.

After much struggle Shashi finally orders a sandwich and coffee, runs into another customer at the restaurant and gets super flustered and runs out of the restaurant. She is really good at these scenes, isn't it? There were traces of abused Anju of Chaalbaaz, and young angry-scared Mehndi of Khuda Gawah and furiously upset Pooja of Lamhe. That's when that little voice in my mind said, wow! The Sridevi is really back!!

How Shashi asks in class why it's THE United States of America but not THE India.

I simply adored the last scene. The way Gauri Shinde has made is so realistic with the clear slow speech where every word is said after thinking, after translating and our underdog has made it seem so real, so amazing! It truly deserves a standing ovation. Not to forget the "chullu bhar paani mein doob maro" acting by the family members. They were also quite convincing. For a moment, I did wonder however, if Ms. Shinde was bold enough, like our other Bollywood directors *wink* *wink* to make Shashi leave her family and go live a happier life with Laurent. But when I heard the dialog, "main apne favorite subject mein fail ho jau aur doosre subject mein pass ho jaau.. yeh kaise ho sakta hai?" I knew she had her brain and heart in the right place. ;) It was time to make laddus again, so what if she can't go attend the final exam or the last class session. And indeed, at the end, as I guessed it, thanks to her lovely niece, the school comes to her and she passes her class with flying colors. After all, her classmates had to have laddus somehow, so then two plus two is four.

And when Shashi tells the class to not make fun of others. Others who remain quiet in the class, or others who are different than you. Wow man! that's some BIG lesson of life and you just show it so simply. Hats off, Gauri Shinde.

It was funny to see Radha ask/say to Mausi (wait, that almost sounds like I'm talking about Sholay, doesn't it!), at the end of the remote class session over a cellphone: "wow! he really likes you. Do you like him too? It's okay, hota hai..." or something like that. It was hilarious in a *chuckle chuckle* sort of way.

Was anyone else rooting for Amitabh to be on that return flight to India? I know I was. :D

Oh and my favorite song would have to be "gustaakh dil..."

If you still haven't seen it, please, do take time to watch this one.

Keeping busy & Happy birthday to Big B!

It's Amitabh Bachchan's birthday today and again after a long while I ended up on his blog. One of the reasons why I love to read his writing is because of the way he writes. It is so fluid and takes me with it as I go from line to line, from thought to thought. I wish I kept a log of my daily thoughts like that. Another thing I love about the contents is how positive it is most of the time and how it impacts my mood. May be I am biased. I don't know. The reason why I wanted to put this in a post is because while I was browsing the posts, I stumbled upon this really thought-provoking paragraph. Here it is:

Its been a day when I often wonder what others do to keep themselves occupied. To me it has been one of great despair. Nothing to do, nowhere to go and having just no desire at all to do something. Yes there is work pending and hundreds of important issues to tackle and resolve, but the strange thing is that when you have the time, it isn’t time and when you do not, then you do. Which is why they say when you wish something to be done, give it to the person who is most busy for that shall guarantee that it shall be done. I was not busy today and so nothing was done !

It made me think how true it is and may be because I can relate to it. This post is a reminder to self to try to be busy as he says in there, to be the person who gets things done. I think it's hard but doable.

Happy Birthday to you, Resp. Amitji! May God bless you.

Silent conversations

Scenes and music like the one here amaze me! So much unsaid yet said; so many emotions conveyed in those moments of silence. One of my favorite scenes from the film.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri in the scene at dusk; harmonica background score by Panchamda (R. D. Burman); film Sholay (1975):

The Voice!

No one, not a single person, can come even close to Amitabh Bachchan when it comes to dialog delivery. I have gone totally crazy for his voice, not just once, or twice but again and again and this man just doesn't seem to be wanting to stop charming his audience. When I heard "dekha ek khwaab to yeh silsile hue", I fell in love with the song instantly, but it was the sheyr that Amitabh says before the song that made it even more appealing and now I don't like the song if this dialog is missing. The presense of the dialog gives yet another depth to the song and without the dialog, this song still remains incomplete for me.

वेहम्-ओ-गुमान से दूर दूर
यकीन कि हद के पास पास
दिल को भरम यह हो गया
उनको हम से प्यार है

(music and song follow...)

vehm-o-gumaan se door door
yakeen ki hadh ke paas paas
dil ko bharam yeh ho gaya
unko hum se pyaar hai

Yet again the dialog that just stays in your heart. Some words that etch the internal walls of your heart and never get erased. This happened when he delivered the dialog as Badshah Khan of Khuda Gawah. Wow! what a voice! what a voice! I am rendered speechless listening to the voice. Only thing you'd be able to feel is that each and every single hair on your body stands up when he speaks these words:

sir zameen-e-hindustaan! assalaam aaleikum! meraa naam baadshah khan hai. ishq mera mazhab, mohabbat mera imaan. mohabbat jis ke liye shiri aur hera ke naam phool ki khushbu ban gaye. jis ke liye farhaad ne pahaadon ka seena cheer kar dudh ki neher bahaa di. jis ke liye majnu ne sehraao ki khaak chhaani aur aaj bhi zinda hai taarikh ban kar. ussi mohabbat ke liye kaabul ka yeh pathaan, hindustaan ki sir-zameen se mohabbat ki khair maangne aaya hai.
aazmaish kadi hai, imtehaan mushkil hai, lekin hauslaa buland hai. jeet hamesha mohabbat ki hui hai, sadiyon se yehi hota aaya hai, yehi hoga. roshni gar khuda ko ho manzoor, aandhiyon mein chiraag jalte hai. khuda gawaah hai.

WHOA! It's magical...
