Remembering Bapuji

Recently, I read that "the best classroom in the world is near our grand-parents' feet". I can't recall where I read it, but I really liked it. Then I realized that it's not only limited to grand-parents but any experienced elder family member so long as we are patient to sit with them, next to them to listen to them. And while I pondered upon that I realized that I had promised to Cuckoo that I will share this story with her.

Dr. Anantrai V. Dave A little background before I tell the story. A couple of months ago, I got this book from Nalinifaiba (mom's aunt, grandpa's cousin). First of all, thank you, Faiba! For sending this one. I didn't even know this book existed until then as it was written in the year 2000 after I left India and didn't know there were folks working on such a book since past few years at the time. It is a book by Shri Moolshankar Jeevanlal Pathak & Shri Kiritbhai Moolshankar Pathak; it is my maternal grandfather's life story. These are the two men to whom I am eternally grateful to for putting this book together because I've got to know more of my grandpa from this book than his life that I saw when he was with us. They've gone around and talked to people and pestered them to share more and more stories they know of grandpa to put this one together. I won't go into the details about that as it would fill up yet another book about how they started writing the first drafts and put together their collected information about someone who was not related to them but touched the deep chords of their hearts by how he lived his life and what he did. Tears well up in my eyes at every single page of thsi book and I feel more blessed reading each and every single story in it - to have such grandfather who is not only an inspiration to the family members but to almost every single person that knows him.

The book and stories are written in Gujarati so I will share that as well as my attempt to describe the incident in English.

Translation:
Needy family, husband-wife, kids were barely surviving. Because of overwork and no proper care, the wife was diagnosed with tuberculosis. It was too late. The family doctor looked at the x-ray and gave up all hopes. Said nothing could be done now, just help the wife spend rest of her remaining life as best as they can. The husband was suddenly overtaken by this great misfortune. Suffering thoughts of how his poor family will be tormented, how will the kids be raised, bothered him. Someone suggested 'take your wife to Dr. Anantrai Dave'. Dr. Dave looked at the x-ray and reports and performed a detailed check-up. He said things seem to be in control. Take your wife to Jinthri TB Hospital, I will write a note. Don't worry about the expenditure. Everything will be fine and everything became fine such a way that today the wife has become a grandmother and day and night she prays to God along with to Dr. Anantrai Dave.
And today's fortune reminded me of Bapuji even more. It says "To be simple is to be great". May God bless him to be in a better state wherever he is and for me to be more like him.

God bless.

dainik praarthanaa

Navratri is here and so are the pious days of prayers. I wish I prayed to mata ji and other Gods like this all throughout the year instead of nine days. But this is a start. As I think of olden days, I am reminded of the daily prayers we used to say as kids. Though I never attended gharshala (Bhavnagar), I know most of these prayers were part of a daily routine there, and others we used to sing at home while growing up. Wish we too had all these same prayers in Vallabh Vidyanagar (where we had completely different set too, which I'll share later), but nevertheless, here it is. Gujarati prayers.

Old Friends & Birthdays

Remember while growing up you promised each other you will keep in touch? Then life happens and you lose touch with those friends that you once shared all of your life with... then you remember them and even more when it's their birthday and wish you still knew where they were and how they were. You wonder whether they still remember you or not for all those special times of childhood you spent together. But in life you can only have so much len-den (give & take) with everyone you meet - can't take any more or less than what we truly deserve. Such is life!

Baby Tiger Poster in India

So as a kid when I went to vacation at my grandma's I'd always be afraid of this huge poster of baby tiger that used to hang in the living room. The poster is long gone but I'm looking for a photograph of that poster if anyone can help find it. I have been searching for it online since days but haven't seen anything that looked like that old poster. It was of a tiger cub roaring with its mouth open and big bright scary eyes. From what I remember, it was only the face of the baby tiger in the poster, but I could be wrong. I think the same one was shown in one of the Hindi films of those times also but I don't remember which film it was.

Anyone remembers seeing that baby tiger poster?

Entry for November 03, 2006

It is wonderful day today! For two reasons:

(1) Dada/Motabhai/KKJani was born on 10th November 106 years ago. I feel very proud to have him as grandfather. Since quite a few days I have been remembering him and I am reminded of some of the things I knew about him and other things I heard about him from others.

He was very simple man. Lived simple life, ate simple food. That is something I would like to learn in my life from him is to be simple in everything you do.

When he was young, he went to Mumbai for work. When he returned after a couple of years he found out that his grandfather - Ambashankar Jani - had passed away. When Kashiramdada told him that Ambashankar dada did not want him to return back to Mumbai, he decided he would never go back to Mumbai. Since that moment he never set foot in Mumbai as long as he lived.

He was very strict when his children were young but became like a good friend to them as they grew older. As his granddaughter, I was always too scared to go near him when I was a kid but as I grew older, I got to know him more and felt more comfortable around him.

When I think of him, I am reminded of him sitting in his chair and writing with his black-rimmed glasses on. He was a fantastic writer. He wrote articles in numerous magazines and periodicals. Some of them include Jan Kalyan, Geeta Dharma, Ramakadu (kids' periodical), and many more. I am having hard time recalling all of them at the moment. All his writings are sitting in a cabinet at home in Ahmedabad right now. Some of them never been published. Wish I get to fulfill my dream of having them published some day.

Thank you, Dada for everything you’ve given to us.

(2) I found out only this morning that it is also Mukta Ba's birthday today! She has turned 85 today. A very happy birthday to my darling grandmother. I really miss her very much.

An amazing woman is what I consider her. Always stood by my grandfather and raised her children well. Such considerate woman, always doing things for others without saying a word, without any complaints. Never interfering in anyone else’s life unless asked, is something to learn from her. Very tolerant woman who has suffered her share of hardships in life but never let her bad experiences affect her behavior. It is difficult to be such a person.

Every time I eat ice-cream I am reminded of her. She is a BIG ice-cream fan! It is great fun to sit next to her and enjoy those one or two bowls of ice-cream with her. Those moments that I could spend with her when I visited her are truly blessed moments. Wish I get to do that more often and for longer period of times.

I pray to God for her good health. I thank her for being who she is. Thank you, Ba, for everything you’ve given to us.

And a very special thank you to Dhruvamama for sending me birthdates of maternal grandparents, and great grandparents. Dhruvamama, I can’t thank you enough. I don’t have words. It is indeed a beautiful day! Happy day!

Entry for September 12, 2006

So I've joined Orkut recently, and I was just searching for some old classmates from 4th standard in I.B.Patel English School. Guess what!? I did find one of them and I was so happy to find out she was the same person. It has been great to run down the memory lane and remember those good ol' days! I was surprised myself to be able to remember at least 10-12 other names of students and a few teachers also.

It is strange how some of the friends whom we thought to be in touch with for our entire lives go away from our lives because of reasons known or unknown; Then there are some we meet after say 20 years and they still remember us.

Two years back at Navratri garba, I saw someone that I remembered was probably in my elementary school. I walked upto her, and asked her if she ever lived in that city and went to that school? And to my surprise, she indeed went to that same school and was one year senior to me. Eventually I found out she was friends with my friend's elder sister. Of course she did not remember me but did remember her friend and her younger sister.

Then there a few years back, I was searching for the girl who lived next door from me. I sent emails to all the girls (with same fullname has hers) I found on a search engine. One of them replied back saying she was the one but didn't remember and when I told her more about all of those times we had spent together - fighting, studying and playing together she remembered it all. It was amazing!

How some people's faces and memories just become part of us, and stay with us for years and years, subconsciously... for rest of our lives.
